i watched the dubbed version of azumanga daioh on comcast on demand's Anime Network. (there was no subbed)

Call me crazy, but I prefer the dubbed Osaka rather than the subbed Osaka by just a slight hair. :D I think the accent suits her just fine and it only add to the mystery of Osaka. (Now if you really want a southern experience watch the dubbed version of Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi.) Now THAT's a southern accent. :P

While I agree that dubbed Osaka sounds pretty good, the Japanese originals are untouchable in their greatness. ADV aren't bad, but they do have some oddish habits when dubbing. Aside from always employing the same cast for every single dub they do, they have that tendency to think that because a character's mouth is open they should be making a noise, even if that's just a held frame in the original (for example, they extended Yukari's scream to a drawn-out ten second grunt in episode 3 where she loses her temper and throws her chopsticks into Nyamo's face). Boy, does that get on my nerves.

Anyway, my opinion of the performances so far...

Good voices - Chiyo, Osaka, Kimura, Nyamo, Yukari
Tolerable voices - Kagura, Tomo
Bad voices - Yomi, Sakaki, Kaorin, Chihiro

But then that's the beauty of DVD - the sub vs dub debate is effectively redundant.

Also known as a Texas accent. Houstonian, to be correct. But Southern is also legit. Houston is to America as Osaka is to Japan, huh? :lol:

I agree that Osaka's voice is cute the way it is without a stupid english dub. I mean how stupid is it to hear "Sata Andagi" in a southern english accent.

Japanese people really know how to make those sound effects as well. Americans suck at that.

Personally, I prefer Osaka's japanese voice. Her english dub voice is ok I guess.

sure that's way it *should* be, but unfortunately the subs on the official DVDs are almost direct transcripts of the dub! This is what I found to be *most* horrifying of the official releases. They don't bother with translation notes like the fansubs did, they just take the easy way out and sub something that English people would understand, even if it's completely different from what the character is saying. For a prime example of the suckiness, check out Osaka's "Bean Knowledge" thing in ep 02.

I still say they missed the mark with Osaka and made her sound Mississippian or Alabaman rather than Texan. But that's just me. :mellow:

I'm proud to say I enjoy Dubs over Subs.

I don't know, the dub turned what was a hypnotic and beautiful voice into something cheap and "LOL REDNECK JOEK!!!!!!".

Actually I like both the voices, but though the subbed one is spacier ^_^

I prefer the sub but not for th reason that the dub ( for osaka ) is bad ( i ausually watvch azu on dub) but because they probabally had somebody born in osaka do it.

And indeed they did. She speaks the daioh-lect from experience.

I'm indifferent towards either one tho, yea I watched the sub first so I'm used to the original voices. If I had watched the dub first, I probably would have liked those better, etc. And Osaka's Korean voice (from DannyCat's clips) sounds cute as well.

Yeah, Buson's actress was a good match. As for the English Osaka... well, Osaka does speak with a slight accent, I hear. Technically so does the American actress assigned to her, but she's surrounded by a cast with exactly the same accent. You can really tell ADV hires locally, and Osaka's uniqueness suffers because of it.

But Skaro made an excellent point. Chicago being a 'second city' and Chicago people being kinda weird and all. And, Midwest accents can get almost as bad as a Yupper's in Chicago: practically unintelligable to anyone not from the area.

From the one dubbed episode I've seen of Azumanga, I'd have to say ADV did a rather nice job. One of the best dubs I've heard.

I don't know why we have to have a dub sub debate over this, (and I'm not trying to be mean or rude or anything, I'm all for opinions) but I personally like both the Japanese and English Osaka voices. (both voices are cute in my opinion)

If ADV had just let Yomi or Yukari's voice actresses speak naturally for Osaka's part, they would've nailed our slightly-twangy, slightly-drawled accent. Dubbed Osaka in its current incarnation is burlesque, which I guess sort-of fits her character. ;p

Now, if you want a real laugh, listen to dubbed Shizuru from Mai-HiME. OH MISS NAHT-SKEE. :lol:

I don't know why everyone makes a big fuss about Osaka's voice, but her voice in both Sub and Dub are ok to me. Whenever someone whines about Osaka's voice, it makes me laugh. Better yet, the next text i read that whines about Osaka's english voice will get pointed at and laughed at.

But in some parts in the dub, it just sounds flat, some of the voices i mean. Like sometimes they're reaction is too weak or they sound like a foreigner trying to speak english. All in all, it's still good. Don't even ask me whitch one i like better, cause they both sound awsome.
