Hiya guys... just borrowed the Azumanga series DVDs from Tom, and well, because I don't understand Japanese, I must watch it with the subtitles on, (which I may say, are terrible compared to fan-subs), and Sakaki, as I knew her to be, is Sasaki in this version. So where does the fault lie? And what is her true name? Somebody much smarter than me must know the answers to this... so help? :o

It was always Sakaki (like in your name) in all the subtitles I've ever seen... And the characters always pronounce it as Sa-ka-ki-san, so I think your name is right. :D

Sakaki is the correct name. She's named after a holy Shinto Tree. In fact her name is a rare Japanese-created Kanji (most Kanji came from China) which combined the kanji for "wood/tree" (ki) and the kanji for "god" (kami).

I have the fansubs and the version that you're talking about, sakaki_fan. The subbers for the version you have just screwed up. In the beginning, they said Sakaki but as the story went on they kept saying Sasaki. I noticed that too, but her name is really Sakaki.

Yep. A friend of mine was convinced that her name was Sasaki because the Hong Kong boot-legers had messed up the sub. Eventually I just pulled up the Azumanga Daioh website
to make sure.

And I am dissappointed with the subs on the DVD- spelling errors, missed sentences, and little or no explantion of jokes and titles... :(

Commercialised subbers lack the burning passion of an otaku fansubber for fidelity in anime translations. :angry:

Asian bootlegs are some of the worse crud that Eye've ever had the displeasure of seeing... <_<

Tommy bought them in Chinatown for $45AUD. ADV is nowhere in site... tom says that he is going to put the fansub version onto CDV for me anyway... so much better... and cheaper!!!

Still I get to watch, so no complaining... I have finally seen the entire series!!!!

I agree. They don't explain much on commercialized subs, but I guess there were some exceptions. I don't know any, but I heard there were.

And I don't think any fansub could possibly outdo the Excel Saga's vid-notes in explaining stuff.

You are entitled to your own opinions on this but your argument is rather weak when you can only bring up one example, ie Excel Saga, to counter the regular consistencies Eye see in fansubbers who have translated many many many anime series more satisfactorily than the commercial ones...Sakaki's complaints about her Azu DVD is one in a million complaints Eye've heard about the legit business...

Yeah, they are the bootlegs. Because nobody's officially subbed Azumanga Daioh in English until ADV. Hence making the ones that I have, the ones sakaki_fan has, the box sets being sold on e-bay and what have you, bootlegs. :)

Of course, now we that we know what otaku meant, we're using it in the inner circle where its more of an inside joke... ;)

Well, in Japan I think it's derogatory in the same way that some people find Trekker to be an insult. Of course, I'm both, so I'm quite used to both terms. They mean differant things to differant people, I guess.

back on topic... buying real dvds of anime in sydney, for me at least, is not only expensive (as it is everywhere outside of japan) but hard to do - the two big places near me that even stock anime, Borders (american bookstore chain; books and everything else) and Dick Smith Electronics (electronics and everything else), have minimal content and sometimes the series they do have are incomplete!

if i went to Borders and bought all the Cowboy Bebop they have there, i'd only get DVDs 2 and 3 of 6! plus, i don't even think they have the japanese soundtrack... (yes i'm one of those ppl!)

anyway, a uni friend showed me a couple of places in chinatown where they sell the stuff from hong kong.. i bought azumanga (as a relevant example!) because now i can hold it! having the leet-super-excellent fansubs on the computer is great, but i can't "show them to friends" so to speak.

i have over 360+ fansub goodness on my pc's.... and yes, it sucks when you can't lend it to a friend :(

Actually, why not? Self-burned cds don't have the artwork covers nor the inlets but they do the job - with an average of 4 eps pro cd you could burn the entire Azumanga series on 6 CDs (or CD-RWs) or a single DVD. Good DVD-burners which support + and - formats are nowadays available for 180$ US or less. And if you find a good graphics-source then you can make the artwork yourself.

That's what me and my friends usually do for a show that hasn't been liscensed yet, but we're cheap and only use the CD-Rs. The problem with that is for some reasone, the the things I burn on a cd sort of "skip" more often then what I have on my computer... ;)

ah, i usually have problems regarding the sync. rate between the audio and the video layer... :)

plus the time it takes to encode the video files to vcd format is waaaaaaay too long :(

Oh, I see what you mean - recoding to VCDs or SVCDs can be a tricky and lengthy business - and it doesn't always work out well. I meant burning the DivX (or XviD) fansubbed-releases directly to CDs - but viewing would be restricted to PCs or the few DVD-players capable of playing divx stuff...

That's what I mean, I just call it skipping for lack of a better word... It gets super-annoying when that happens. :angry:

Actually, Japanese DVDs are usually more expensive (and usually have fewer episodes per DVD, to boot. Sometimes they have only one!), from what I hear from people who have lived in Japan. It seems manga is cheaper, though.

Try putting the files from the CD on your hard drive. I know what you're talking about, but the fansubs I have on my hard drive never skip unless they were badly encoded.

That's true. Each volume of the Azumanga comic is just ¥680 (US$5.79, £3.62) - I bought all four volumes off a UK importer for less than twenty quid. The Azumanga DVDs in Japan are quite unusual in that they have a high episode count (just six volumes for the whole series), and even though the five episode volumes are ¥6500 (US$55.35, £34.58) and the four episode volumes are ¥5500 (US$46.84, £29.26), this is still a terrific bargain by Japanese DVD prices. From what I understand, DVD, LD and VHS prices have been kept artificially high for years (and DVD prices are less than half of previous LD and VHS prices!) to keep Japan's enormous rental sector afloat.
