Title: any animes similar to Azumanga

OsakaFan - January 24, 2005 02:53 AM (GMT)
I know that there is never going to be a anime that is enjoyable like azumanga, but I was wondering if there is anything remotely like it, a anime that has some kind of innocence to it, you know what I mean. But if there isnt any, I guess I have to keep rewatching the dvd's

Kasuga Ayumu - January 24, 2005 03:19 AM (GMT)
Well, you could always read the Azumanga Daioh Manga. Funny stuff, funny stuff.

Or anything else produced by ADV might have a similir touch to it. I doubt it, since Azuma allowed ADV to change little of his work when making the anime, but ADV might have some other stuff.

I've also heard that Azuma has done anime in the past. Maybe you could look into that.

Also, there's Azumanga Web Daioh and Azumanga Daioh - The Very Short Movie.

Since you say you have the DVDs you probably already saw The Versy Short Movie, but if you've not seen Azumanga Web Daioh, I can send it to you.

Hope this helps. ;)

Jason - January 24, 2005 03:35 AM (GMT)
Just as an aside, ADV doesn't actually produce any anime or manga. They only distribute it.

Lithium_Kitsune - January 24, 2005 04:13 AM (GMT)
I cant think fo -any- anime like Azumanga Daioh.. o.O; I thinks that's prolly why we love it so much. <3 It isnt the same magical-girl genra thats been run into the ground 389461 times xD

Jason - January 24, 2005 04:37 AM (GMT)
I would recommend Sensei no Ojikan, but unfortunately, the subbing stopped around episode 8. :(

Kyle - January 24, 2005 04:37 AM (GMT)
School Rumble. :o

0saka - January 24, 2005 05:54 AM (GMT)
Try Hoiad Agnamuza! It is a great anime that has the voice actors Linsely Lohann as Oyihc, Brad Pitt as Akaso, Hilary Duff as Ikakas, Johnny Depp as Omot, Orlando Bloom as Imoy, Elijah Wood as Arugak and Daniel Radcliffe as Niroak. It is a great anime that is just like Azumanga Daioh!!!

WARNING!!! NOT ACTUAL ANIME!!!

X-Br34k3R - January 24, 2005 10:26 AM (GMT)
If you're into insanity with a stroyline, try Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi. If you're into even more insanity with a storyline and a bit of darkness to boot, go for FLCL. GTO is a bit too realistic in the life problems the students face, so that's out. MSAB gets heavy near the end, but it's still fun and the resolution is a good one. FLCL, as per usual GAINAX fare, the resolution is pretty choppy.

Some anime that are similar to Azumanga Daioh are
  • All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku (Believe it or not)
  • School Rumble
  • Tenshi na Konamaiki (Manga is out in the USA as Cheeky Angel)
  • Sensei no Ojikan

As for the Azumanga Daioh web movie, it was included on the 6th DVD.

motorola_otaku - January 24, 2005 03:49 PM (GMT)
This thread's been done. But since it's not in the 30-day window, meh.

I still say that nothing, ever, will compare to Azumanga and I still hope no one ever tries. I am, however, eagerly anticipating the domestic release of Yotsubato. :D

Yes, I know what you mean.

The Kokoro Toshokan was billed as similar, if you one of those who understand that Azumanga is not primarily a comedy. It lives up to the Azumanga standard in this aspect. However, the way they merge lolicon, incest, and lesbians into one convenient package pushes the envelope a bit. Kaorin's infatuation has no leg on what's going on around Kokoro. If you can stand it, it's a good choice. My patience ended around episode 4, even though I know that it gets better later on, when secrets of the library get revealed, etc.

Curiously enough, I think Haibane Renmei is worth checking out as well. Everyone in Glie is so crazily nice, you'll drown in the good will if you abstract from the fact that the show is dealing with issues which dead children take with them to another world.

Nope. They're not. The Very Short Movie which is on DVD 6 was basically a theatrical trailer that was shown in movie theaters in Japan. Azumanga Web Daioh is completely different, and so far hasn't been released yet.

You should still watch it at least once, if for no other reason than to gain firsthand insight into the reason behind your criticism. And it's really not that bad. ^_^

tomtom - February 1, 2005 09:43 AM (GMT)
that DOES involve acquiring them somehow... maybe in the future.

School Rumble is awesome, yes, but what exactly does it have in common with Azu? Other than the fact that much of the story takes place in a school, I don't really see the similarity. One is pure random, the other is obvious high school romance.

Abenobashi. It be more insane than Azumanga. Watch now.

osakaki - July 26, 2005 07:25 AM (GMT)
Now I can say Ichigo Mashimaro. ^_^

tedbannana - July 26, 2005 09:12 AM (GMT)
abenobashi is waaaaaaaaaay dirtier than azumanga daioh. not to mention, not as good. :P

Alicommagali - December 28, 2005 08:26 PM (GMT)
Ever noticed that alot of anime have similar characters?

Osaka=Mutsumi(Love Hina)=Mamimii(FlCl)=Robin(WHR)

Chiyo=Kirika(Noir, at first)=Shinobu(LH again)=Fuu(Samurai Champloo)

There are other examples out there, like Margaret Burton from Madlax(five stars on that one, btw), but I beleive that these stereotypes are chosen to create interesting scenes between characters. Since that is a lot of what anime focuses on, you could really say that all anime is similar and therefore any show could be debatably similar.

KILL!

And there are a few character similarities:

Ichijo -> Osaka
Rei -> Yomi
Himeko -> Tomo
Becky -> Chiyo

There's still quite a lot of differences between the series, though.

YES. AZUMANGA DAIOH TAKES PLACE AT GRAND CENTRAL STATION, WHILE PANI PONI DASH TAKES PLACE IN A BOWLING ALLEY AND SOMETIMES A DELI.

れいか の てんし - December 29, 2005 09:37 AM (GMT)
...hn... i have read that there is a Pani Poni manga... as i am currently incapable of watching the anime, i tried looking for the manga..... with no luck whatsoever...

...and upon reading, i have found that School Rumble and Azumanga-Daioh are nothing alike, apart from the school setting and the majority of the characters being female... they use very different humour... the only real similarity i have seen is the similar physiques between Osaka and Tenma (both do not at all appear their age)... ...and i suppose slightly similar personalities... although Tenma never chased dust in the eyes...

Nickstorm - December 29, 2005 09:23 PM (GMT)
Tomo=Excel Excel (Excel Saga)
Chiyo= chiriri (Bottle Fairy)
Yomi= Lord Ilpilatzo (Excel Saga)
Osaka=Shii Aasu (Puni Puni Poemi)
Sakaki=Sarara(Bottle Fairy)
Kagura=Sarara again
Yukari=Izumi (Fullmetal Alchemist) the kickassery is uncanny XD
Nyamo=Sango (Inuyasha)
Kimura=Happosai (Ranma 1/2)
kaorin=Futaba Aasu (Puni Poemi)
Chihiro=Mutsumi Aasu (Puni Puni Poemi)

And there ya have it. ^_^

Whaa? I can see Tomo as Excel, but I can't see Yomi as Illpalazzo-sama, or Nyamo as Sango. Illpalazzo is too over-lord-ish, and Sago is actually violent. And does Nyamo have Kimura hitting on her all the time?

ANYWAY.

Tomo = Himeko (PPD) = Excel (ES) = Ron (HP) = Kagura (Furuba) = Kana (HBRM)
Chiyo = Becky (PPD) = Negi (Negima) = Hermione (HP) = Mint (GA) = Rakka (HBRM)
Yomi = Rei (PPD) = Naru (LH) = McGonnagal (HP) = Nenene (R.O.D) = Hikari (HBRM)
Osaka = Ichijo (PPD) = Mutsumi (LH) = Luna (HP) = Tohru (Furuba) = Nemu (HBRM)

then I got bored.

Exactly. You could find similarity between a schoolbus and a beer bottle if you looked at them long enough. :rolleyes:

I still say they haven't made the anime that comes even close to Azumanga. Panpon is close, but.. not quite. Sensei no Ojikan is close, but.. not quite. School Rumble isn't close at all, so I don't even know where you guys came up with that one.

As for individual character similarity, yeah, maybe. But you'll never convince me that there's another Osaka. Every example I've seen discussed here at one time or another comes back to the "schoolbus/beer bottle" argument.

Tsukiko from Paranoia Agent comes pretty close to an adult, darker version though.
