What would you get if you mixed the light-hearted screwball comedy of Azumanga Daioh with the forces of the undead? Would you go with classic western vampires, or the Jiangshi/hopping vampire?
I've already devoted a considerable amount of thought to the subject. I've read what little fanfiction devoted to it I could find, and added my own small contribution to the conjunction of cute high school girls doing silly things and blood-sucking corpses.
First question: Who would be among the first to fall prey? Yomi might hold on to the belief in a rational universe too long, but then again, she's one of the more level-headed and competent group members, and her glasses may provide a shield against vampire hypnosis.
If Sakaki already became a vampire, there's no question that Kaorin would walk right up to her and bare her neck, eager with the expectation of being together forever.
Ditto if Sakaki was a hopping vampire.
Kimura might be easy pickings for young female vampires, but again, he has the glasses in his favor. His behavior suggests that he is a pious man, schoolgirl-oggling aside, so he might have a holy symbol on his person that would prevent an undead encroachment.
He's a mouth breather, and he's always gaping and gasping like a fish. He lacks the desperate speed of Yukari or the athletic prowess of Nyamo. Unless he happens to have some recently purchased holy sutras on him, this teacher is going to get a neck full of Jiang Shi claws.
Kagura seems like a fine target for a vampire. She's full of strong, healthy blood, but also gullible enough to fall for Tomo's crazy schemes. Her self-confidence could easily lead to a downfall.
As an athlete, she'd fair much better against a Jiang-shin. She can run much faster than a rigor-mortis-riddled corpse can hop, and as a champion swimmer she's got to be good at holding her breath.
Chiyo. I don't want to admit it, but she is easy to snag, full of rich, young, blood. She's invited all the AzuDai girls over to her house, so if one of them was turned, they'd be able to enter at will and prey on her.
Chiyo's big house might help against a Jiang Shi (lots of stairs and thresholds) but her small size and weak endurance means she'd need a good start or the revenant would catch up to her. The pigtails make for easy grabbing, and subsequent draining the breath out of her with long wicked claws.
Yukari: She gets raging drunk and then stumbles around the streets at night. Total vampire-bait.
Yukari could outrun most hopping vampires
Second angle to consider: What would our favorite AzuDai characters act like if they became vampires? =o Since Jiang Shi tend to be devoid of personality, we'll just focus on the western vampire possibilities.
Tomo Takino: Dead and loving it. She's got even less factors demanding restraint as one of the living dead. She can stay up all night and crash in a coffin all day. She's finally able to outrun Sakaki AND Kagura with her vampire super-speed. With this wish fulfillment made reality, I think some of her gratuitious jerkyness and envious/spiteful nature would evaporate, because she no longer needs to compensate for deep insecurity and crippling incompetence with delusions of granduer or constant degradation of those around her. The downside is that she'd bite everyone at any opportunity, not in order to turn them into vampires, not even because she's hungry, but because it's too fun to resist. Typical Exchange:
Tomo: Hey Yomi, you've got some bear curry on your shirt!
Yomi: Huh? *looks down*
Tomo: CHOMP! *Slurp slurp*
Tomo would pick on Chiyo a lot, and probably take her for a long flight against her will. Yomi would have to keep her in check with a liberally dispensed baka-punch backed up by a crucifix held in her fist.
Chiyo: The ideal mix of creepy and cute. She hovers outside your window, gently flapping her pigtails, begging to be let in.
Yukari: Yukari is an older, nastier version of Tomo, without the former's endearing incompetence. She would slide into the role of complete monster with perfect ease. She can feed on annoying students all she likes, savoring the taste of a something more intoxicating than the finest Saki, and more savory and delicious than any buffet crabs. Her total lack of regard for the well-being of others, coupled with sadistic tendencies, would make her into the ideal merciless undead killer.
Sakaki: A shy, hesitant, mild-mannered vampire. Says "I'm so terribly sorry, I really don't want to do this" right before biting into your artery. She'd want to eschew human prey and live of animal blood, but she can't bring herself to attack animals.
