So, what role does kimura play in the great azudrama?

He holds the girls back, keeping them from growing up. Because he presents such a scary portrait of adult men, he causes the more susceptible girls to view him as a representative of adult men and their sexuality. It's the kind of thing that makes people wanto "never grow up".

The episode with his wife only reinforced it. The girls felt it was "wrong" that he'd have a wife like that because they fear ending up just like her, married to a perverted salaryman like kimura.

Thoughts?

I don't think that's for you to decide. If it's relevant (or completely irrelevant) to the subject then it will be discussed.

Your analysis seems very plausible, if it's true or not.

Or, y'know, he could be just another one of Azuma's many comic reliefs. Any psychological undertones are strictly secondary to his original purpose: to make people laugh.

What, you mean like Mr. Kimura being an archetype for "perverted salarymen" all across Japan? :P

Gah, can't people just think of him as comic relief? :P

Actually the show is all about comedy, so I guess he wouldn't really be a 'relief'...

Yes he is. He's the perverted salaryman/oyaji stereotype. That's one reason he's funny.

Look, the world has a kajllion books which try to pick apart the japanese psyche. Additions to that sad mess are not needed.

Even if he's a perverted salaryman and all that, it's funny because it makes our heroines to feel uncomfortable.
It could be a giant eel, a breathing pen, a weird clock, it could be anything and it would make us laugh. The perverted salaryman is just a plus.

I just find Kimura as a strange, quiet type. Sure, he's a little perverted. Makes me wonder if he has a past

Unless you happen to be a spaced-out Love Wife, that is. :P

And his side of the gene pool can't be all bad... he did produce a baby Sakaki, after all. ^_^
