Hi everyone,
A little while ago there was an influx of bots joining and spamming the forum, which we slowed with some blocklists and stopped by requiring Admins to manually approve new members. Osakaki worked out an alternative whereby newly-joined members are very restricted until they make a post in any existing thread. Since bots are programmed to start a new thread and post in 'General Discussion', they join but then don't have permission to start new threads. UPDATE: I have decided that all is well and it works fine, and so with Osakaki's confidence-building "it's up to you", I went ahead and 'locked' the 'New Members' group. Anyone in the 'New Members' group cannot start a thread anywhere in the forum EXCEPT for in 'introductions'. This is so new members who are not spambots can make a thread to say hi, at the same time validating themselves as real people. If you are already a member, you simply need to post anywhere in any existing thread. No need to make or find your introduction thread, just go post like normal anywhere you like and you'll be switched to the 'Members' group. ^_^ |

Yo, you want the list of banned spambot emails from my forum? I've dealt with a lot of them, so I've got hundreds of emails. Banning them will help keep some spambots away, too.
